7Zip is the way to go - no matter if you're using Windows or Linux.
It has an open source and the developers want it to work with any archive availlable.
WinRAR should be good - it's commercial, but it's not compatible with anything and still not as mature as 7z.

In fact, Vanico is right, you don,t pay for Winrar, at least if you are not stupid and accept it.

BUt 7zip is free and just better then it.

until I read this treath, I only knew winrar.
