If you really want to know how a game similar to your idea works: Download Nexuiz (Classic), or better: Xonotic.
Look at all the features and guess which engine was used (ok, modified) ;)
It IS almost the same as Quake 3, but with all the updates/community mods remade (not copied!)as mutators. There are other weapons, but still some similar ones. Also other character models and maps and last, but not least: even some new game modes.
