XBOX Pro-Mod
« on: August 13, 2010, 19:28 »
Hey people,
please let me present you my modified xbox :D
Introduction:
… After I noticed my old XBOX 1.6 has some issues with scaling the screensize under Linux (yes, I can run linux on it  ) I got an older model (v1.1). That xbox had a mainboard with some traces on the downside corroded with acid over the years – It was on all the time and you couldn’t turn it off.
After I soldered some wires on it to repair it I have begun to modify it.

Here is a list of all features:

- replaced the old harddrive (10GB) with an 120GB device
- Softmod on the OS on the harddisk - installed OSs/user interfaces:
  - UnleashX dashboard
  - Xbox Media Center (plays all audio/video/picture formats, even internet streams; RSS feeds; multiple network clients)
  - Linux (XDSL)
- plays homebrew software from harddisk, USB or CD/DVD
- all self burned CDs/DVDs work
- option to copy games to the harddrive
- build in 2 USB ports
- build in HDD  (red) and LAN (green) activity LEDs
- replaced the original 70mm fan with a low noise 80mm fan and added 2 40 mm fans on the left and 40 mm fans on the right side - after I noticed this cooling system is not efficient enough i turned around some fans (unfortunately i had to replace the big fan with another one -.- )
- multi color illumination (red/green/yellow like the Power LEDs) switchable via software:
- underbody
- controllerports (comming soon)
- logo (comming soon)

Maybe I will later upgrade the RAM from 64mb to 128 mb. (400 pins to solder -.-)

... and here's my old worklog:

1. Cooling system:
I have replaced the original 70mm fan with an 80 mm fan (an extreme silent one) and build some 40 mm fans at the sides:

Also I have cut some wholes in some part -> I have modified the whole air tunnel system.

Last week It was very hot and my Harddrive had 50°C so I’ve decided to turn around the big fan and the fans on the right side. Unfortunately I had to replace the big fan with another one because I had to cut away some parts of it to make it fitting in that case.
However: the HDD temperature was 9 °C lower.

2. I’ve build some status LEDs in it:
The red one shows the HDD and DVD activity, the green one the networks activity

The white wire goed to the IDE pin 39
The Brown one to the LAN controller
And the red wire is my 5V power supply taken from the DVD power connector

I’ve made a little plug with two resistors (for the LEDs) in it. Btw: you can see the old black heatsink I’ve sticked on the chipset (southbridge)

3. Light stuff
I wanna have a big load of ultra-light-LEDs (maximum power: 7-8cd) in 2 colors (red and green) which get switched by the color of the POWER-LEDs, but if I would connect all of them parallel to the POWER-LEDs my motherboard would burn trough.
So I’ve mad sth like a powersupply-HUB. I have designed my own circuit board and took 12 resistors which work like relaises. I can connect up to 5 LED devices to it.

The black wire (middle) goes to the PSU ground.
The white wire goes to to the red Power-LED, the yellow to the green one.
The LED modules get theiy power from the pin header (red and green seperated )

I had to “recycle” old computer scrap (in this case an old DVD player) to get the transistors.

3.1: The under body light

Well, I have 2 other circuit boards with 12 red and 12 green LEDs.
I also modded the LEDs: I filed of their heads and polished them after that: SO I’ve increased the angle of light radiation.

I hope Raj will not ban me from the side for all that posts xD

Thanks ^^

Well, when I was 12 or 13 I have modded the PC case I had
(made some standers under it, underbody light, lighting fan, replaced the door with plexiglas+ drawed some flames on it (with a dremel)
but later I did not like it anymore....
I might have some photos of it anywhere - I can add them later ;)

Compared with a PS2 and a Gamecube I prefer the xbox because of it's better graphics, higher performance, harddrive, better controller (I think it's the best joypad ever) and design (ok, that's a matter of taste)  ;)
The only advantages a PS2 has are it's more silent, it never has heat issues and there are more games for it - but that's only commercial games: The Xbox has a big homebrew community, so you can get many free games and emulators (even PS1 games work)
