Title: Donations public?
Post by: [MiA]Raj on November 30, 2016, 17:51
Just wondering... would any of you who have donated mind if I made a post that listed all donations? So username, date and amount of each donation would be public.

Yay?

Sure.
Be good to remind folks it's not free.
Could we also get special kick privileges for the trolls?  >:D

Yeah that's why I haven't done it so far - some people might feel embarrassed when their donations are smaller than others'. Also it seems a bit odd to reveal how much money some has to spend.

On the other hand all this secrecy is not good either.  :-\

$60 every 3 months, plus some extra for domain and webhosting.
If anyone has a spare dollar/euro, please send some: http://miasma.org/redirect/donate

The money goes straight to our server hosting provider and can only be used for paying for their services.

Thanks everyone, we're set for at least another 6 months now. :'(
By the way, everyone who donates gets VIP (http://miasma.org/index.php?action=groups;sa=members;group=11) status here, as long as they have an account. :)

Thanks to you guys for running a great server, keeping it going, keeping it up to date, and keeping botters off.

Nice. And I´m sure you will go on after this seven month, too. We won´t let this server die!

What about accepting bit coins? ;) Also, anonymous donations can solve the issue about who puts in what amount ;) Specially $$ is not the same in all countries as exchange rates can make $10 a lot of cash outside usa for example ;) So, to each his own as per the good heart :)

Yeah, maybe just a list of who donated and thats it, although you can see that from the purple colour nickname also...

Hi guys, I just made a contribution. Thanks again for the great server and the good job for running it. Cheers!

{added later}Oh BTW, i am for total transparency and it makes donations crystal. It might as well help some to know that its not free to run a server.  Well, on the fact that some people may not be comfortable with the amount other gave,  it may be fair then to underline that any amount, small and not so small, helps and is welcome.  In that matter, i really liked the Broadcast message i saw today, a nice reminder. My 2 cts.

Thanks again.

Just so you know, the server isn't yet running. I've put my test server online with a near-copy while we work with the host to get the Mia server back up and running or hire a new one.

I added the "nag" to the test server as some regular players may not have known about this forum to know what is going on.

Title: Re: Donations public?
Post by: Piglet on October 23, 2019, 15:49
Much appreciated.

We need to find out if a more powerful CPU would allow us to run lag free, or whether the problem is the game engine.

In order to find this out we need to get use of a seriously powerful machine to do a test on.

We're exploring various options, but don't have an answer yet.

If anyone knows a data centre owner who has such a machine available and is willing to help us get a test done, please let me know

When I say seriously powerful I mean one with a CPU mark score over 2730. See the CPUs on this list for examples: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

Thanks mate.

Still trying to find a way to get access to a powerful enough machine to do a sensible test. It's getting frustrating

Chipped in a little a couple of times since my return. Has the contribution banner been removed? I'm sure it used to be on the homepage? Will chip in something during my holidays (most of next week and all the following week! :D) Going South!! West-side is the best side :)

Thanks! I didn't want it to be to intrusive so it was only there a while.

We'll need to keep a careful eye on hosting cost. The reason is the price of electricity.

Our host is run by a gamer, and has given us a really good deal to date...I think they've been charging us at or under cost price. Their business electricity price is not capped, and is due to be reviewed in November. From what I've heard prices are uncapped for business. I've heard reports of increases of over 800% for some businesses.

I can do bank transfers also :)

That way you avoid PayPal charges and it goes straight into the pot. Someone kindly checked it worked by sending £3. That's the only bank transfer to date.

That account only currently accepts UK transfers.

yes, much as residential leccy costs have gone up the price cap did not apply to commercial premises - and their rates went crazy

however the govt has stepped in and using public money to offset the rises - for residential and commercial so it shouldn't go up by 800% (though it will go up some)
Title: Re: Donations public?
Post by: Piglet on September 21, 2022, 12:55
Yes. We'll find out more in November when the D/C's own power contract is next reviewed.

It may be that we can reduce power consumption by hardware change.

Perhaps we can do something to reduce power when the machine is idle.

Whatever we do, the cost of running is going to go up.

If we ran it "from home" at residential rates we'd have to find a host for the things that run from the VPS - forum, monitoring, stats... I'm sure there are other down-sides to consider too

How does a kilowatt hour cost over there in the UK?
Title: Re: Donations public?

For business? It depends entirely on the deal you get at the time you make it with the supplier.

@Piglet.

When you have a mo', can you drop the donation details in here so I chip in.

I think it'd a good idea to create a sticky post and pin it to the top of the Site Info page.
Making it a bit more prominent may help those who want to, but don't quite know how to donate.

Hi!

There's a rather small link at the bottom of the forum page "Donate to gameserver & hosting (https://miasma.rocks/pages/donate.php)"

Not many people have found it! I'm very very grateful to those who have.

If people want to mention that they're helping, that's fine.

Think I've chipped in a couple of hundred over the past couple of years, don't really keep track. I did start playing on Piglets servers back in 2006 :D I just try and chip in a few times a year. Bank transfers are the best way to be fair - just don't be put off that the account name doesn't match the details - it does go to Piglet :)

And most gratefully received, thank you.

The funny thing is that most of the time donations are sort of anonymous to me too! I see people's real names and not their player names.
