So...what do you all think about how the gameplay feels on the test server we're currently running Warfare on, compared to a week ago?
The server costs about twice the monthly amount for significantly smoother gameplay. It has more cores so we could potentially run more servers than we currently do.
If you prefer it, are you willing to help donate a little more for it to stay running?
If you'd be willing to help by setting up a regular Euro donation of even a few Euro a month through the donation link To help keep running whichever server option we decide upon that would be even more appreciated. https://miasma.rocks/pages/donate.php
We are still exploring other options - but your input to the discussion and experience on the servers' gameplay feeling would be really useful.
The server runs way better than the previous one. We just need to find the perfect tickrate setting for the right amount of players.
I love this server much more, then the populated one. Cant u make it so, that people redirect to that ip and port? so they can test the server under 'force'?
This is the only one running ONS & vCTF (Warfare) isn't it?
We got up to 30 people by stealing 16 players from Freon the other day :)
Hello,
During the game on the new server, I did not notice lags as it was before. In General, the game on this server I like a lot more. And since we now have more performance, add more spectator slots please.
Piglet, add more ways to donate, because using paypal is a pain for me. I can not even choose Russia in the drop-down list when paying because such a country is not there.
Hi Timon,
What other route would work for you? We don't currently have a bank account set up for Miasma, but I could potentially look at doing that.
We currently have a Paypal account which can be used for anything we need, and a NFOservers donation account we can only spend for NFOservers hosting (the VPS that currently has the Freon and iCTF servers - and up till last week had the Warfare server.
Hey
I wanted to say that i appreciate the new server much more
And i was wondering if it was possible to see a kind of counter showing money engeged and money needed ?
Hmmm - I'm not sure I have the skills to do that systematically, but I could keep things up to date manually.
The existing setup was this site which has the server monitors & forum (paid for in $), and the VPS which hit 100% cpu on large player number (paid in $ quarterly).
We'll need to keep this site, but have the option of the new server or the VPS in the future.
We do have some funds in the VPS account which we can only use for that. I forgot to cancel my donations to it...so if someone's willing to trade real money for a transfer of funds on Nfoservers account that would be nice...
For this server the charges are in Euros and if we're allowed to keep the server (we're finding out) we can either pay monthly or yearly. Paying yearly saves €36 over the monthly cost.
The current state of the coffers are that we need a little over €120 more to pay for the server for a whole year in one lump and then start saving for next year's bill, or we can pay monthly for a few months with what we have while saving for the next monthly bill.
i love, really LOVE new server, no laggy, less ping, and im willing to colaborate, let the credit card i borrow be unblocked in december and i can transfer some pennies! :*

Correction:
per 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. ^-^
Right. I didn't have all the information when I posted above. The costs were for co-location and after buying a physical server like the one we're testing on.
To keep renting the server we're using would be 157 EUR/month! Nardaq_NL very kindly paid for this test. Thank you.
To buy a similar server would cost upwards of 1,500 EUR and then hosting and maintenance costs on top.
I've got a call back with a local data-centre owner about hosting and possible hardware, a conversation with specialist server company about what they might be able to sell me, a conversation with Nardaq_NL about hardware he might be willing to buy and possible co-location near him.
While we follow through the various different options it would be useful to know who would be willing to regularly donate to help pay for the hosting of a server if we bought one, and who would also be willing to help with the initial purchase. More people donating small amounts every month might make all the difference.
The alternative option is to revert back to the old server and accept that it will be laggy at high player numbers...but is cheaper to run.
Yo,
Hell was away for 2 months on work trip and I missed all this interesting stuff going on. As you know I run my own business and with the brexit and other stuff, my cash is stuck in the business and sales are not going good. BUT, all this should change next year and I will be most willing to dole out small amounts whenever I can and more when the business starts flying ;)
Would it help if we had a small site running a donation counter and donation mechanism? If I get free time, I can try setting up a test and if everything goes ok, I can show you what I propose. But I cannot give an ETA since my business is going through some rough weather and I need to plan on a weekly basis lol.
The idea is to use a CMS + plugins to setup a donation mechanism using stripe or other gateways. People can give monthly automatically or when they want. It can be all private to ensure this is a community thing.
Making this setup is a few hours of time and most of us tech savvy people can do it fast. Let me know if it sounds interesting ;)
Cheers,
Hell
It's not my area of knowledge, so don't know enough to comment.
I'm lucky enough to have some cash left at the end of each month.
What is your business, if you're willing to tell us about it?
I only have met one person in the last 3 years who has told me that they want to leave the European union. I asked them why but they couldn't tell me more than vague "we want control". They couldn't tell me what control they thought we didn't have or why it would be beneficial.
The more I know - and I keep myself informed - the more it appears that Brexit is bad for everyone except people hoping to make a killing as stock markets or currencies lose value (they're "shorting"). I can't see any benefit to me or my children in any of this. The press in the UK supporting brexit seems to be controlled by very rich people who wouldn't be remotely affected.
Hello,
I will make a small test site and send u the link to check it out and if you like it , you will have to FTP the files in an empty directory and I can maintain it ;) I will let u know once I get some time to set it up. I know the tech to set this up.
Long term: I am doing research into poverty and how tech can solve it.
Day Job: I run a small marketplace. UK was a good market and UK vendors were good too. With brexit, ahem!
Other job: I am innovative and I have a ton of stuff like apps etc to make and hope 1 day I can buy you all a good gaming server lol.
Brexit was all about controlling your borders from EU immigrants who were taking small time UK jobs? Everyone played their cards wrong and this is costing small businesses a LOT OF money. Right now I am planning expansion into EU and Asia. But as you see, UK pound was good business as it was so strong. Little sales can make good cash.
Now running costs are piling and sales are down! But I am launching hopefully multiple stuff next year :)
I am all about being free. A 9-5 job was never my way :D
Cheers,
Hell
I wish you well in that. I hope we bin Brexit. I work with men and women from all around the world, and they're great people. I wouldn't have it any other way.
>> What other route would work for you?
Maybe patreon.com (http://patreon.com) or directly to card
.
Thanks a lot man :) I hope you guys bin it! I work with everyone across the globe too and indeed most people are nice. The bad apples are always the individuals and never their origins.
I will find some time and link you what I come up with regarding the donation mechanism. I am also going to think of an easier way to setup a donation method. (I was thinking about patreon.com like Timon mentioned but undecided until deeper thoughts). The new server is awesome. My aim which I ALWAYS blamed on my net actually comes down to the server. In the new one, I hit what I aim first time in many years! So, if funds permit, this server is one kick ass beast.
Until then, cheers :)

I'm bugging a supplier and a local datacentre guy for quotes. Nardaq's also getting info.
Those prices seem to be a bit high.
You can get Ryzen 7 3700X or Intel i9 9900K (5ghz single core turbo) for about 70-80 euro including VAT.

Our setup is absolutely unique. We have a server version which wasn't ever publicly available, and a somewhat different berserk setup that needs higher power CPU than a standard server.
We have a week left on the test server rental and then will be moving back to the previous machine while we work out what to do next.
Ideally we need an E-2174G based machine to run on. Renting a physical is going to be too expensive for the community to pay for monthly at the rate donations have been coming in, so we're investigating buying a machine.
The CPU is hard to get hold of as its current replacement has been recalled.
If anyone knows how to get hold of a 1U server with one in at a good prince let us know!

I don't know very much about hosting servers, but from watching Christmas movies, I do know that a good prince is tough to find. O:-)
I'd be willing to kick in maybe a couple hundred euros to help get things off the ground if needed. How many others need to do the same?
Dell have a sale at the moment. I wish I knew more about hardware!

I can have good discounts with DELL.
I orderered from them for like 500000€ of computers and servers 2 years ago and we keep ordering replacement comps on regular basis.
Just send me the server spec and i will ask them.

For ut servers, look for the highest frequency/ipc cpus you can find, iirc it only runs on single core.
You could try locking each server to its own core or 2 cores, to avoid thread jumping by windows scheduler.
I dont think you even need more than 8 cores total for 4-5 servers.
Better disable turbo, look for the highest base frequency cpu.
Hyperthreading should be off, i think.
Use 32bit server only, 64bit has some issues i think.
Not sure if it runs best on 64bit or 32bit windows
You might need windows server 2003 maybe older for minimum issues.
Linux version has some tickrate issues, people used to avoid it.

See the admin forum thead please!
We've boiled down the options to four at the moment. These are in my order of current preference:
1. AMD server with CPU a little faster than the one rented for the test, hosted in the UK near me
2. Intel server with CPU the same as the one rented for the test, hosted in the UK near me
This server is currently hosted in that datacentre near me: https://miasma.rocks/mon2.php?s=4
3. Intel server with CPU the same as the one rented for the test, hosted in the Nederlands where the test was done
The Warfare server is currently running from there: https://miasma.rocks/mon2.php?s=1
4. Remain on the old VPS server.
The Freon and iCTF servers are currently hosted there: https://miasma.rocks/mon2.php?s=0 and https://miasma.rocks/mon2.php?s=2
In order to do any of the options 1-3 we need a little more in donations to pay for the hosting costs. It will be around £360 a year to run once the hardware is bought.
I'm willing to buy the hardware myself for the community, and for option 3 Nardaq_NL has offered to pay for the hardware himself - however if anyone wants to help specifically towards the physical machine, please let me know.
For options 1 and 2 the payments out would be in Sterling (£/GBP). For option 3 the payments out would be in Euros (€/EUR)
If anyone is interested in helping, the donation link is at the bottom of the page...or here: https://miasma.rocks/pages/donate.php
If anyone has any particular thoughts about this, please post in this thread
For information, we have about a month and 4 days left on the test server - so will be reverting back to the VPS (option 4) when the rental runs out.
Edited to add a month! Yay.
Thank you to James T Kirk who just donated - and to Thor who donated earlier in the week (I'd not spotted that email!).
Updated with player name :)
Breaking news...we have a little longer on the test server than we thought we had, but it's definitely time to decide what to do next.
AMD all the way.
Option 1 has my vote.
How does the server it'd go in play for you? Would be useful to get that more populated to check everything feels good (it will) .
The machine that game server is on isn't powerful, but it shows the routing and ping we'd get to the datacentre location.
https://miasma.rocks/mon2.php?s=4
Pig can you post the cpu models for each machine?
1. AMD server custom built by the datacentre owner in a 4U chassis, hosted in the UK near me: AMD Ryzen 5 3600 - CPU Mark 2806
2 & 3. Dell (probably) Intel server with CPU the same as the one rented for the test: Intel E-2174G - CPU Mark 2687
4. Remain on the old VPS server: Intel E5-2697 v3 - CPU Mark 1997
CPU Mark scores higher is better. Single core score only counts as UT is single-core only.
Oh - and the development server I have is an Intel Xeon E3-1240 V2 - CPU mark 2027
Ok after some research the Ryzen is MUCH faster than both Intel options in single thread, probably because the Intel can't hold its turbo at 4.7 forever, plus the amd has 50% room to spare even with 4 servers running.
Also Intel's max turbo is useful only for 1 core loaded, if you run a second or third server clocks will drop according to some internal bins limited by time so benchmarks can be misleading
Amd max turbo is calculated according to power usage/temperatures so unless you're loading all cores it won't drop clocks more than 200mhz
(https://tpucdn.com/review/amd-ryzen-5-3600/images/boost-clock-analysis.jpg)
There are 1-2 edge cases where the intel are much faster but these are synthetic benchmarks so I don't trust them much
Yup.
The only downside I can see to the AMD is that unlike the Intel chips it's not intended for being hammered 24*7, and it needs a bigger case which would up the cost for hosting anywhere but in my local datacentre. The first of these shouldn't be a problem as hammering 24*7 isn't the use case for the server. The second could be a problem if we find problems with the datacentre...which is why I'm keen on people trying the UK Freon server to see the ping.
I'm very close to giving the nice datacentre chap the nod to start spending my money.
If we go this route (to any physical server) we'll need to get regular donations for co-lo hosting, this website, and DNS charges over the year - with a little extra to cover any maintenance needed on the machine.
If I buy the machine with my own money we'll need donations of about £40 (+paypal fees) to pay the initial hosting fee, then an average of a little over £40 a month regularly after that to be ready to pay the next bills as they come in
I've sent the email for option 1 - the AMD option.
We have a little more time than expected to prepare.
You could pick the ryzen pro 3600, which has some extra tech related to servers and is certified for use in such environments.
Thermally, this could fit in 1U with a low profile cooler and RAM, using PCI-E riser cables for a small GPU if it can't run headless and a 250w mini psu.
Now technically speaking i have no idea how they use this stuff in datacenters.
Looks like that chip isn't yet available, and the extras appear to be for corporate desktops.
AMD Server is being ordered today. Exciting.
The warfare server is paid to the end of the month. The VPS is available for longer than we are likely to need.
I'll need to knock up an announcement for the servers to let people who don't follow developments here know about the changes...and invite regular donations to help cover hosting and ongoing costs.
It would be brilliant if we could get more donating small amounts on a monthly basis.
I'd happily support pay for play if all players were "clean".
Although I'd hate to put money into a server that allows botters and cheaters access.

We'll never do pay for play. The server will remain free to play for all players who are not a problem.
It costs money to provision and run the server. This week I have committed to buying a new physical server. It will be housed in a commercial data-centre. Those things cost.
If people enjoy playing on the server, we'd welcome regular donations (£1 or £2 a month through the regular paypal option on the donation link (https://miasma.rocks/pages/donate.php) would be great!) to help keep things running.

We have quite a few active admins. Where we get legitimate reports of cheats or problem players (or we see them ourselves) we ban them.
We do not "allow" botters and cheats. However, try the Freon server in the evening and you will see players who are so good you would be easily fooled into thinking that they are cheating.
I apologise for any lags you may see over the course of the day...I'm making backups ready for testing the new server.
