Thanks mate.

Still trying to find a way to get access to a powerful enough machine to do a sensible test. It's getting frustrating

Chipped in a little a couple of times since my return. Has the contribution banner been removed? I'm sure it used to be on the homepage? Will chip in something during my holidays (most of next week and all the following week! :D) Going South!! West-side is the best side :)

Thanks! I didn't want it to be to intrusive so it was only there a while.

We'll need to keep a careful eye on hosting cost. The reason is the price of electricity.

Our host is run by a gamer, and has given us a really good deal to date...I think they've been charging us at or under cost price. Their business electricity price is not capped, and is due to be reviewed in November. From what I've heard prices are uncapped for business. I've heard reports of increases of over 800% for some businesses.

When I say seriously powerful I mean one with a CPU mark score over 2730. See the CPUs on this list for examples: https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html
Ah...simpler times
Now you hold the whip over me shouting for 3600 or I'm banned

I can do bank transfers also :)

That way you avoid PayPal charges and it goes straight into the pot. Someone kindly checked it worked by sending £3. That's the only bank transfer to date.

That account only currently accepts UK transfers.

yes, much as residential leccy costs have gone up the price cap did not apply to commercial premises - and their rates went crazy

however the govt has stepped in and using public money to offset the rises - for residential and commercial so it shouldn't go up by 800% (though it will go up some)

Yes. We'll find out more in November when the D/C's own power contract is next reviewed.

It may be that we can reduce power consumption by hardware change.

Perhaps we can do something to reduce power when the machine is idle.

Whatever we do, the cost of running is going to go up.

If we ran it "from home" at residential rates we'd have to find a host for the things that run from the VPS - forum, monitoring, stats... I'm sure there are other down-sides to consider too

For business? It depends entirely on the deal you get at the time you make it with the supplier.
