Help me spec a new PC
« on: February 03, 2020, 14:59 »
My pc is sulking. It's not happy that I bought a server that is faster than it is. It's an i5 which is not as powerful as I want, and is sometimes refusing to boot.

I'll never need 2 graphics cards or the stuff you get with expensive mobo's. I won't be powering led strips...

I'm looking for something for the next few years. Any advice or improvements on this configuration would be helpful:

Asus ROG Strix B450-F Motherboard +

  AMD Ryzen 5 3600X +

  Corsair 2x 8GB 3600Mhz DDR4 Vengeance LPX +

Corsair VS550 550W 80+ Power Supply (will swap out for better PSU from existing machine) total all of the above  £428.93

Corsair Force Series MP510 NVMe M.2 480GB SSD £72.99

Video: Already got XFX RX 580
Cheapie case: Cooler Master MasterBox E500L ATX £37.05

Data drives for all the stuff like ut crap I've built up over time, family photos etc Seagate Barracuda 1TB ST1000DM010 £34.01* 2   (RAID 1 pair)

£606.99

Those extra 35 pounds for a 3600x...meh, it's only 200mhz...not worth it, 4400/4200 = +5% performance, you could spend that on a seasonic PSU(top quality manufacturing and 5-7-10 years warranty) or get a bigger ssd(1TB).

There is always the option to overclock and reach 3600X or upgrade to a 8/12/16core monster, some years later if you're not happy with the 6core performance.

Should also consider that outside of heavy IO use, most NVMe SSDs are indistinguishable.

p.s. dont get the corsair psu :P

It's only £15 less for the same bundle with a 3600 so worth it just for the better heatsink

The psu will be swapped for a decent one from my old machine (I can't remember what it was, but it was a reasonable one.

Sys Drive: WDC WD5000YS-01MPB1

You're ok with the parts, not sure about the RAID, i've had arrays fail many times both on seagate and wd, so i don't use them anymore, i just backup to an SSD

The old corsair is a monster psu, it can probably handle both PCs simultaneously lol.

For your old build i suggest you go with the CX450
It has 5 years warranty vs 3 years
Is rated at 40C vs 30C
It's much more modern, ATX v2.4 vs 2.31, (that's 2013 vs 2008) so it won't have issues with the new build, if you want to upgrade again later or a different future build

Both of your builds consume peak 300-400W at stock, you wont have issues with a quality 450W psu.

Thanks. I missed the PSU recommendation. I've gone for a pair of Toshiba P300 1tb's

Asus ROG Strix B450-F Motherboard
Ryzen 5 3600 (not x) + AMD Prism RGB Cooler so should be able to clock it same as 3600x
Corsair 16GB (2x 8GB) 3600Mhz DDR4 Vengeance LPX
Corsair Force Series MP510 NVMe M.2 480GB SSD

What would be better to power it, the Corsair VS550 or the Corsair HX750 from the old machine?

I'd say go for the HX750. Not for the power but the HX series.

And like holy mentioned, Seasonic (prime) are also good ones.

In this 9yr old comp I'm using a Cooler Master B600 running 24/7. and before that a antec PSU (fan died)

About HDD's  Hitachi -> HGST(=WD) -> WD

Are AMD processor good ? I'm happy to left AMD and switched for intel in 2016...
I'm still using i5 4690k but will upgrade soon.

AMD are leaving Intel in the dust behind them. I'm not sure what has happened to Intel, but they seem to be struggling in the desktop market at the moment.

AMD Ryzen chips are incredibly powerful at a fraction of the Intel price for similar performance

Just for comparison, the 8cores/16threads i7-6900X was released in mid 2016 for 1000-1100$ and the 10cores/20threads i7-6950x for 1700$.

Ryzen came out in early 2017 with 8c/16t cpus that beat both top intels in multicore by 20% while costing 300-500$ depending on model.

We're at a point where you can buy the 8c/16t Ryzen 2700 which is another 20% faster for 140-180$, or a 6c/12t for 100-120$, intel keeps selling 6cores for 200$+ and 8cores at 300$+

In the meantime during late 2017 to late 2018 Intel went in panic mode and released the same cpu architecture since 2015(6 series) but increased core counts and selling price to 8cores and 550$ calling them 8th gen and later 9th gen and forced people to upgrade motherboards, because they were supposed to be "electrically incompatible"

Some guys responded with modding some bios and got working intel 9th gen 8cores on motherboards from 2016.

Then in mid 2019 amd released a totally new cpu design that's around 30% faster than their previous gen with 6c/12t at 200$, 8c/16t at 300$, 12cores at 500$ and 16cores at 750$, all of which are officially supported on every motherboard just with a bios update. (you CAN put a 16core on a 50$ motherboard, not recommended though)

The only reason to buy intel now is only if you're willing to spend 500$ for their top 8core, get a custom water cooling loop, overclock to 5.2ghz+ just to get 5-10% higher fps in really old single-core bound games like cs:go.

Yeah piggy AMD has shifted its atention towards CPU market, they were pushing for GPU but since NVIDIA launched RTX series and already has another AMPERE technology lined up so i guess AMD accepted defeat for challenging nvidia for gpu market and focused on cpu and are giving intel a headache xd

at present amd has best value for money cpus out there

ASUS ROG Strix B450-F motherboard on-board sound.

Ahy ideas how to fix it so the sound and event are synched? I'm being hit, then hear the shot that did it...

not sure it will help but in ut - under settings,.  audio tab,. audio mode,. mine is set to h/w 3d audio,. might be worth trying different settings to see if it helps

if you're running the 64 bit ut,.  apparently that forces open al for the audio ( whatever that is ) is possible to run the 32 bit ut - (solution 5?) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=594282124

I still using win7 but at some point will move over to win10

I'm on the 32 bit UT. I've tried 3D audio and H/W 3D Audio - same issue.

I wonder whether my ancient oem creative soundcard would work in this PC...  [Edit] nah. No pcx these days
