I was only allowed to carry the machine gun in boot camp, never got to shoot it.

Being from the good ol' US of A, I'm assuming you're talking about an M16?
Go to @08:38 to see me throwing some lead down the range with the help of an M16A1.

M60, same ammo but belt-fed. I'm getting old, boot camp was 47 years ago, but I do recall some free range firing (with tracers). Not nearly enough enjoyment for the many times I had to haul that weapon around. :)
