DPI and mouse mat size
« on: November 25, 2020, 00:30 »
Think I've already answered my own question from looking at youtube vids, but will ask anyway.
I've got a really large mouse mat, but only use about a 16th of it, it's probably not much use on freon/tdm etc. I used to play ONS religiously (used to challenge Cobra-1 and everyone else back in the day) and found doing 360s on the aim really helpful, but when it comes to the finer aim - anything like half an ONS map away, my aim is awful. I did convert to freon for a few years, used to think I wasn't too bad at it, when sober.

Long story short I was just wondering what others are using for dpi settings and the mouse mat size they use?

Mine is about a 3 foot long mouse mat, but have loads of crap on it so only a handspan of mouse mat is useable, I tend to have my DPI really high so I don't have to move my hand much, really sucks when trying to aim on freon though, hence my lacklustre K/D scores. Perhaps I'm outta practice, but my setup seems to work really well for other games: doom eternal/l4d2 etc. Perhaps I'm more familiar with those or the skill level on miasma is much higher than the titan servers?
Just thought I'd ask. Peace :)  8)

Currently using mx518 with a 30cm  mousepad size , it can goes up 16000 dpi  but it's useless here, high dpi will make you  aim badly. I used to play 900 dpi for years, and i switched to 800 and 600 dpi now.

Funny thing, when i played 800 dpi i remember that to make a 360° i had to move the mouse about 15cm.
And now without noticing  i'm at 28cm to do a 360° with 600 dpi since a year or something , i'm surprised, i thought i was still around 20cm at best.

In ut2004 mouse setting/input i  personally leave all blank.

Make sure to disable mouse acceleration too.

Current setting: 600 dpi, 1000hz, ingame sensi setting 0.85, 28cm@360°.

Cheers dude, will give it a go: clear my mouse mat and reduce my dpi. Currently using a corsair gaming harpoon RGB mouse (think that's what it's called  :-\

people have all kinds of dpi and sens settings and comparing what different people use gets confusing

easiest way to compare

go to empty server or instant action, start game

place crosshair over some object
move mouse to right (or left) until you've turned 360 degrees and pointing back at the starting object
measure the distance you moved the mouse

360 on mine is around 6",. I know some of the hitscan guys need to move mouse a lot more (furthest I heard about was 14") :)

(edit ah see already 360 degs mentioned above!) :)

MX518 for me as well and a GamersWear mouse mat - both owned for 10+ years now. I don't know what dpi is set up so I guess default. Interessting to see how you guys have set it up, I've tried it and for a 360° turn I have to move the mouse for 10-11cm (that seems to be around 4" in unlogical units  :D)

Many years ago I used a way higher mouse sense within UT so I could basically turn around while barely moving the mouse. Jumping next to another player turn around while having riple rox loaded was quite the thing. :))

G MX518 or the vulgaris variant? The ordinary kind is a good rat, but lacks 1000 Hz polling rate. That was my old rat, which I replaced. The newer, G model, is fine in that respect, but I opted for the Razer Deathadder V2 instead - and I'm quite pleased with that theft.

The very first model that was released, not sure what version that is. It replaced my MX510 which unfortunately broke, still the best looking mouse I ever owned.

Yeah I think that is my problem. 2cm for 360 degrees roughly  :))

Thanks for the input everyone.

I was watching how much they move the mouse on some of the tournaments last night, and was thinking my god  :-[

14.5cm (5.7") / 360 here on a 30cm glass mousemat.

I used to run at 7cm, until someone showed me that was why my aim was so bad. I could aim in the general direction really fast....but with no precision.

Nice piglet. I know what you mean: aiming in the general direction quickly, probably why I always preferred flack cannon :))

Just tried it on the Tam/freon server it feels really weird, but more precise. Dropped my DPI to minimum and cleared a load of the mousemat - from various items that magically accumulate near my pc! It's a 45cm by 35cm mousemat, might as well use more of it.

Got the in game sensitivity in the options set to 0.75. Mouse acceleration is off - I remember that from titan  ;)

Ingame sens: 0.42 + user.ini tweak (aMouseX Speed=1, aMouseY Speed=1)
DPI : 3200
16-17cm for 360°

Although in near-range play(spam) 0.44-0.45 sens is better and 0.4-0.41 is better for pure sniping.

Razer Deathadder V2 gives me cramps, looks big enough but is too flat at the back to fit my over-sized hands. Good product though.
The sense thing is very individual. I use silly low sense, 0.5 meter (20 inches) for a 360. That sounds like I'm a sniper but everyone who have played with me knows that's not the case.. When I played IG it was the double. But the reason for my low sense, I think, is because I'm extremely left handed and play with right hand setup. My precision hand is busy with the keyboard. Tried switching to left hand but it just felt awkward. :D

My take: My mouse pad is huge. This is because I like to cover a part of my hand to enjoy warmth than touch the cold desk :P

Good aim required :
 1. Good, high quality mouse which wont jerk.
2. I use 1000 DPI but I change when needed
3.  But my 1000 DPI is butter smooth and RIGHT DRIVERS matter. I was playing since October with wrong driver and I was sucking (even if my score during gameplay was good lol). I knew I was not taking out DC's head as easy or as often as I would like :p (Mind you DC's aim can make you RQ 100 times a day lol). So, do not forget to triple check that your gaming mouse driver is the right one as the difference can be a jerky mouse vs butter smooth one.

4. My mouse can do 16,400 DPI but screen size matters.  If you play on 12 inch laptop, lower is better. I am on 17inch so 1000 is apt.

In short, a good quality mouse can feel like butter and there are tons of other settings like polling rate (insanely important) and acceleration. I used to afford only $10 years back and  used a china one lol. Then I upgraded a few years back and now all is butter :D

Invest in a good quality mouse once and benefit for 5 years than buy cheap every year. Around $40 is enough unless you want the real pro ones which honestly is a lot of marketing lol.
