a new / "old" gambling addict has arrived again ;D
« on: January 21, 2025, 21:11 »
Hello everyone!

I played Unreal Tournament 2004 ONS for a long time "back in the days" ,,,, 2004 - 2007.
Before that some years ( 1997 - 2000 ) i played Quake II CTF via Dial In Modem on a Quake server of the technical university in Vienna called "toilet flush".
Now I have seen by chance that Unreal Tournament has received an impressive update due the active support of some tireless UT fans.
I particularly like the new sophisticated levels, the new equipment, weapons and also the shooting speed.
On the miasma servers, you can see very quickly that only people who are dedicated to this game play here and appreciate teamwork based experience.
As always, I'm looking forward to the next game with some like-minded players of my age :)
I'm not the fastest player anymore with the best aim, but I'm going to buy me a 120HZ  screen, so probably in the future i get a few more kills :D

Welcome :) It is always fun to have old timers back. Still the best game for me even after I bought others :D

Welcome to Miasma!!!

FPS gaming on a 56k modem is an interesting experience, thankfully we've moved on since then, however a stacked server running Edge (map) comes pretty close to recreating it.

My earliest 1st person shooters were Quake II & Duke Nukem 3D, Q3 Arena was also a blast.

There are players of all ages here, the majority are well behaved :)

You might want to familiarise yourself with your User.ini & UT2004.ini files (inside System folder).  These can be tweaked to make the game run smoother, such as increase FPS, run in 64bit, widescreen, match mouse DPI with Unreal 2004 X and Y axis Count Speeds etc.

You can also extract the maps from the cache to play offline if you want a bit of extra practice.  You'd need to add the mutators though.

Happy hunting :)
• Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

You'd need to add the mutators though.

You may be able to get close - but some of the stuff runs serverside only.

The other suggestion other than looking for ut2004 tweak guides for your ini files (as noted in the post above) is to try at running either on Linux (see the forum thread about installing on Ubuntu) or create a backup copy of your system directory and try out these patches which should provide better gameplay on windows versions later than xp and win7.

Our version of the server code incorporates those Windows timer changes in an unreleased version of the game.If I had the skills to know how to compile the game under Linux, I think we'd move to Linux for everything.

Most of the UT2004 players are old. Plassy being the oldest here I think.

@ pishach
yes I forgot about quake III Arena :D
also many long lasting gaming sessions with countless "dead virtual players" :D
the age is relatively, really important is not to be at the last place at the end of a game :D

@ Grim
the topic with the ut2004.ini is one I have to deal with more closely
because of UT2004 I will soon exchange my 10 year old Samsung 24" for a Dell UltraSharp U4025QW, 39.7" screen and I am curious how UT will be displayed in connection with 120 Hz, the aspect ratio and a customised ut2004.ini.
I will post a few experiences, maybe someone can gain something positive from my HW / SW setup

@ Hellfire
I agree with you that this game has an increased appeal not only because i played it in my "youth" despite my own advanced age :D
In any case, the challenge is still there and is gladly accepted

@ Piglet
I have to read through all the tweak guides again :)
so far I'm happy that my FPS averages 140 - 150 FPS on a 75Hz TFT, almost everthing runs smooth and the ping averages 20-50ms
With the new screen/hardware, the refresh rate and the new display ratio, it will be maybe "more" exciting again :)

Hi Ronftl,

Welcome to MiASMA.
Indeed nice to see previous "retired" players getting back into the originals.

Fast and good aim is also missing with me, should not prevent you to score heavy.

Me, I'm usually in the top middle scores and often a bit above but that is a combination of the team and me keeping to my game plan.
Hell's early YT recordings gave me a lot of info how I wanted to play.
https://www.youtube.com/@Hell_Fire_Back
Still after 2 years playing here there are many things I need to fine-tune  O:-) like in Edge as a driver or still need to get better on sitting on the manta.

One thing I still do is trying to be as diverse as possible to develop my (limited) skills.
Like Grim says there are indeed a lot of "tweaks" you can edit in your ini's.

Here are some nice examples of players showing their skills:

All in all I hope you will enjoy the battles we will have  >:D

Haha, know Ron, a lot of these recordings are on maps when I need a break or don't like to play so it's a momentum and does necessarily show the best of you...

Nah. Bufty is the oldest I know of on the servers and he's playing Freon. He's lethal with rockets.

I have a few devices I move between, but my main screen is an 35" LG ultrawide running at 100Hz (also curved).
I use foxWSFix v2.2.0 which supports widescreen, more on that here:  https://miasma.rocks/index.php?topic=1964.0

You can quickly change resolution by typing setres 5120x2160 (or your preferred res')
• Have you tried turning it off and back on again?

Hi Right !

the target and the effectiveness of the weapon in the most of the situations are the main problem 4me :)
With the Flak Cannon in close combat 1x hit and the opponent is history
With the Shock Rifle further/medium distance 3x-4x hits (depending on health points) and the opponent may be in the afterlife
Sometimes I'm not sure if it's the resolution of the screen, my reaction, the DPI of the mouse, the ut2004.ini or my eyes :D

Hell's gameplay looks pretty smooth&relaxed, but that's no wonder with a good aim 😉
The situational use of the maps and the possibility to use the advantages with the right team member should lead to success.

The „manta rides“ as driver and passenger unfortunately end up quite quickly caused by good Shock Rifle or Avril shooters :D
Jumping up on the Manta and staying there after a collision with ‘obstacles’ is still a challenge.

I always found the battles very relaxing so far and will certainly continue to enjoy them in the future because it's a wonderful stress-reliever :D
But 4 sure its better to go to the gym too, as the lumbar support in the seat alone won't help to strengthen the back muscles :D
